We live in an age of immense technological progress, which makes reskilling a priority. New machines and digital design systems are so advanced, that they can even take the place of human labor, making reskilling essential. To stay relevant in the workplace, either as a middle-skill employee or a key stakeholder, you will need to refine your technical skills and embark on an entirely new learning experience.

We understand that this is a daunting task. This post aims to help prepare you for the future of work and familiarize you with what reskilling means today.

Professional Development In The Technology Age

Upskilling and Reskilling: An analysis done by McKinsey & Company suggests that 39 to 58 percent of the work activities in operationally intensive sectors could be done by machine This means that to keep employee retention high, the future of work will have to focus on upskilling and reskilling.

Upskilling is a process in which staff is taught new skills to help in their current roles. For example, a bank teller or grocery store clerk would upskill when transitioning to a management or corporate role. Reskilling is a process in which staff is assisted in taking on different or entirely new roles. For example, an elementary school teacher who wants to become a computer programmer would need to reskill.

    New Educational Pathways

Learning Experiences For All: Studies have also found that the demand for technological skills in the workplace is expected to rise by more than 50 percent. Luckily, educational institutions are taking this seriously. Community colleges around the country are working with technology giants, such as Amazon and Google, to establish apprenticeships, create new certifications, and offer degree programs for motivated students.

It is difficult to identify the absolute best method of reskilling and upskilling, as it depends on the goals of the company and the preexisting skills of its employees. This means that employee engagement and clear communication is key in figuring out the skills your workers already possess, and what kind of learners they are.

    Employee Engagement in Modern Industry

Workforce Development and Technology: In order to move forward, companies need to present clear and engaging propositions for their employees. Once employees understand the benefits of developing new skills, they will be motivated to learn.

While many students opt for unpaid internships to gain work experience, it is important to know that apprenticeships and work-based learning opportunities allow people with limited education or non-traditional backgrounds to learn about a profession while still earning money. To help people find their way, the U.S Department of Labor launched Apprenticeship.gov, which features a search tool for locating openings in cities across the country.
